September at Manuels River

Daily, 10:30am and 2pm, until September 3rd – Guided Fossil Site Visits.  Join us on a walk through time, to an age when trilobites dominated the seas.  Our Guided Fossil Site Visit leads down the Ocean Trail from the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre, exploring the natural history along the way, and ends at a 500 million year old fossil locality.  There we will investigate the natural rock fall and look for the fossilized remains of the trilobites, brachiopods and other animals that lived in the shallow sea which covered this area half a billion years ago.  $15 adult, $9 student/senior/youth.  Admission to exhibits and related programs included. Weather permitting.

THUR, Sept. 6, 7pm: Grey’s Anatomy Trivia. If you’re one of those people who has watched (and rewatched) the entire series of Grey’s Anatomy to the point of basically being a surgeon yourself, it’s time to put your knowledge of these surgical interns to the test. There will be prizes, snacks and bar service available. Pre-registration is recommended for this event, a maximum of 6 people per team, tickets are $10+HST per person and can be purchased by calling 834-2099 ext. 206. This is a 19+ event, valid ID required. All tickets are non-refundable.

FRI, Sept 7, 2:30-4:30pm or SAT, Sept 8, 10:30-12:30pm: Young Scientist: Fungi. Molds, and Yeasts, and Mushrooms…oh my! All you FUN-Guys and FUN-Gals, who want to learn more about spores and fruiting bodies, come and join the fungus among-us at Manuels River. $7 per participant. No pre-registration required. Parent or guardian must attend with children. This program is designed for children aged 4 to 7 years old.  NEW! Young Scientists that attend 5 programs earn their Level 1 Young Scientist crest.

SUN, Sept. 9, 2:30-3:30pm: Grandparent’s Day Guided Hike and Campfire. Come celebrate Grandparent’s Day with a gentle hike along Manuels River followed by a campfire, sing-a-long and marshmallow roast. Free event by donation. Weather permitting. To ensure the hike is going ahead please call the day of at 834-2099 ext. 206.

TUES, Sept. 11, 7pm: Paint & Pinot. Unleash your inner Picasso at Manuels River Paint & Pinot! Learn how to paint like a pro in this step-by-step class and create your very own work of art to take home. We will be painting a beautiful fall inspired acrylic at this upcoming event, visit our Facebook page for more details and to view the image. Admission $30+HST, reservations must be made in advance by September 10. Call 834-2099 ext. 206 to reserve your spot. Space is limited. This is a 19+ event, valid ID required.

WED, Sept. 12, 10-11am: Little Explorers. Come along for an engaging and interactive hour of stories, songs, activities and play, as we learn about the world around us. $7 per child or free with membership (parent(s) or guardian(s) free). No pre-registration required. This program is designed for children 2 to 4 years old and their caregivers.  NEW! Little Explorers earn a sticker every time they attend and work towards a special sticker after 5 programs.

THUR, Sept. 13, 7pm: Nickel Film Tour 2018. We will be screening several local short films as part of the Nickel Roadshow including Sala’am B’y, Lamenting Pluto, Skip, Waiting Outside, Casey and Snowstorm Roulette. These films have gained a wide range of attention, awards and nominations, and have been selected to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Screening is $5 per person.

SUN, Sept. 16, 2-3:30pm: Palaeontology Club: Weird and Wacky Early Life. Come join palaeontologist Dr. Rod Taylor for an interactive session about the history of life on Earth. We will talk about how fossils form, and look at some of the organisms that have been preserved over the past 700 million years.  $7 per participant. No pre-registration required. Parent/guardian may attend, but are not required.  This program is designed for children aged 7 to 11 years old. NEW! Palaeontology Club members that attend three programs earn their Slate Palaeontology Club crest.

SUN, Sept. 16, 12-5pm: Science Literacy Week Fair. Drop by to see the Manuels River interpretation team as we celebrate Science Literacy Week at the Avalon Mall along with other members of the science education community.

TUES, Sept 18, 6:30-8pm: Evening Plant Hike and Campfire.  Celebrate Science Literacy Week and the final evenings of summer with a relaxed and informative hike exploring the variety of plants found along Manuels River, followed by a campfire and marshmallow roast.  No pre-registration required. Children under 11 years old must attend with a parent/guardian. Free event by donation. Weather permitting. To ensure the hike is going ahead please call the day of at 834-2099 ext. 206.

THUR, Sept. 20, 7:30pm: Four Seasons Autumn Equinox Concert. Join us as we celebrate the coming of Fall to Manuels River with a performance of the Autumn Movements from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and other seasonal inspired selections by the Young Virtuosi of the Suzuki Talent Education Program, along with special guests The Celtic Fiddlers.  This event is the third in a series of seasonal concerts. Pre-registration recommended. Call 834-2099 ext. 206 to reserve a spot.  $15 + HST per adult, $8 + HST per youth/senior/student. 

FRI, Sept 21, 2:30-4:30pm or SAT, Sept 22, 10:30-12:30pm: Young Scientist: Toads & Frogs. It’s not easy being green sometimes, but it might make you more likely to get kissed! Hop and jump on over to the river to discover the world of frogs and toads.  $7 per participant. No pre-registration required. Parent or guardian must attend with children. This program is designed for children aged 4 to 7 years old.  NEW! Young Scientists that attend 5 programs earn their Level 1 Young Scientist crest.

SAT, Sept 22, 2-3:30pm: Family Guided Fossil Site Hike.  Celebrate Science Literacy Week with a guided hike to explore our fossil site.  No pre-registration required. SUN, Sept 23, 2-3:30pm: Coding Workshop. Offered in partnership with Kids Code Jeunesse, kids will learn basic concepts of coding and computational thinking through fun, collaborative, exercises using Scratch and Micro:bits. Free event. This program is designed for children aged 7 to 11 years old. Pre-registration required and space is limited. Call 834-2099 ext. 206 to reserve a spot.  Please Note: You will need your own laptop.

SUN, Sept 30, 2 pm Chefs for Trails Join us for a unique culinary experience on the scenic Manuels River trails. Renowned Local Chefs will prepare small plates with local ingredients at various points along the river trails. This event will highlight both the culinary talent we have in the region as well as the fall harvest. Registration opens at 1:00 pm with the food hike beginning at 2:00 pm. Parking for this event will be at Villanova Junior High School and a shuttle service to the event will be provided. Tickets are limited and can be purchased through Eventbrite or at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and website for more details on this one-of-a-kind Fundraising event. To receive membership discounts, tickets must be purchased at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre or by calling 834-2099 ext. 206. This event will go ahead ‘Rain or Shine’.
